ZIMBABWEANS IN CHINA TAKE THE LEAD IN CYCLONE IDAI RELIEF.
When the news broke out that a disaster had occurred in the form of cyclone, we all were once again poked on the still bleeding wound after the loss of miners in Battlefields.
Cyclone Idai suddenly made waves as it pounced into Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. It left a trail of destruction and loss of life which in Zimbabwe has been described as the deadliest weather disaster in years.
Social media got flooded with photos of the disaster particularly from Zimbabwe. While we always see the negative side of social media, this time It triggered a national intervention. From individuals to organisations. When finally, the government declared it a National disaster, it was consolidation of the generous acts of the Zimbabwean people. United for love.
Zimbabweans in China were not left out as the heart is always home. Different organisations like the social group Zimcan, Angels, Sunrise Foundation, Women of Virtue, Zanu PF FEAD, university groups, individuals and more, quickly got into action and soon it became a national cause. A Zimbabwean cause. Clothes, shoes, sanitary wear and various other items were raised and measures had to be taken for proper coordination after seeing this overwhelming response. The embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe in China, had to be involved after being approached by community representatives. They were more than proud to be part of this noble cause as such a committee was formed to coordinate the whole process. A press statement attached below, was released and the appointment of these individuals was endorsed. [Check attachment]
To date, more than 2,400 kilograms of goods have been raised and awaiting shipping. A call is still being made to the people of Zimbabwe to continue contributing in the form of finance to make sure the goods reach people who need them. As of now goods have been halted temporarily from being sent to Guangzhou as the storage facility provided by the shipping company is filled up. Hence, after the clearance of the first batch, a second phase will start.
The Zimbabwean community in China now adopts the hashtag,
For cash donations people can contact Mr Abinel Matemera who is a committee member in the coordinating team finance department as stated in the above press statement or Mr Makuyana. Or any committee member for more information.
