At least 50 people have been left dead, others missing when floods hit Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Monday night. The floods that hit the city and its surrounding areas have rendered thousands homeless with no food or drinking water.
The Congo River and its tributaries were reported to have burst their banks after the heavy rains. There was also a landslide near the University of Kinshasa. Kinshasa is home to more than 12 million people and the death rate is expected to increase as the water subsides. Among the dead was a family of six which was buried in the landslide and another person was electrocuted and died.
A magistrate in Lemba was quoted saying that poor construction, lack of water drainage systems and land erosion contributed to the dangerous conditions. Search and rescue is still underway as many victims have been swept away. More rains are expected as the rainy season has just begun.
The African Union Chair, Moussa Faki Mahamat has sent his condolences and thoughts to the victims for their loss. Many African countries have recently been hit by floods with the devastating cyclone Idai which is still fresh in people's minds and its effects yet to be rectified.
There many channels that have been created on how people can help on FACEBOOK.

Nigerian comedian/actor/producer Ayo 'AY' Makun has brought Nollywood to Zhongguo (China). AY has sealed a deal with Huahua Media which is one of the biggest companies in the Chinese movie industry. He made the announcement when he recently met the Nigerian community and African movie lovers in Beijing and via his instagram handle. He was in the company of the Chairman of Huahua Media and Mr Babatope of FilmOne Entertaiment. AY is an award-winning Nigerian actor, comedian, radio and tv presenter, writer, director and MC. He was made UN Peace Ambassador in 2009 after winning six awards in 2008. He is the CEO of Corporate World Entertainment Nigeria.
AY's deal with Huahua Media is going to birth another 'destination' film '30 DAYS IN CHINA' which we anticipate to be nothing short of quality and laughter considering the language and far cultural differences between the two worlds. The deal signed by AY to collaborate with Huahua Media in this movie is a big break paving way for more African recognition in the Asian country that has become home to many Africans who are battling negative perception about the continent Africa. It's a huge success to not only Nigeria but Africa as a whole.
Nollywood as the Nigerian movie industry is called, is the biggest movie industry in Africa and the number one movie producers per year in the world. African movies as they are popularly known are ethnically based and revolve around cultural, religious, tribal, and traditional themes covering love, occultism, marriage, corruption and more. However, AY's production has a different touch of cross-culture, adventure and discovery, embodded in humour and appeals to an international audience.
Quite a number of African movies have had an international audience and one of the movies is "30 DAYS IN ATLANTA" which was produced by the same Nigeria's finest and great comedian Mr Ayo 'AY' Makun and directed by Mr Robert O. Peters in 2014. Mr Makun also starred in the same movie along side big Nigerian actors like Ramsey Noah, Mercy Johnson, RMD, and Hollywood's Lynn Whitfield, Vivica Fox, Karlie Redd and many more. AY's touch of quality story-telling in a humorous way was the reason his production work '30 DAYS IN ATLANTA' was the highest grossing movie of the time it was released.
The announcement of '30 DAYS IN CHINA' has left fans on their toes already waiting to see another great touch of Mr AY himself which he said will hit the market in 2020.
The relationship between China and Africa has been in the spotlight and has been an all rounder from education, business to cultural. The interaction between the two lands has had a great impact on the people to people relations and harnessed by the Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Africans do have a distinctive characteristic that breaks them into the 53 states that make up Africa but bound by one code. Therefore if one member is excelling, the whole continent takes pride in it.
Nigeria is one of the homes to the greatest minds that Africa has ever produced. From music to movies, from business to intellectuals, Nigeria leads. They stand out wherever they find themselves at. Nigeria was the first to open a cultural center in China to serve as a hub for everything Nigerian in order to create an awareness on the growing negative perception of the West African country. Interaction between people is the most efficient way of educating and informing people and cinema is one of the most powerful and efficient tools available. Film is more than just a form of communication and entertainment but also a major commodity in international trade. Nigeria once again has broken boundaries and penetrated into the monopolised Chinese movie industry.
