2018 was marked with the 18th FOCAC meeting which saw almost all heads of African states gather in Beijing for the crucial forum on China-Africa cooperation. Over the years we have seen how China-Africa relationship has risen. The past years China has opened its doors to foreigners which has seen among other nationalities an influx of Africans. The cooperation has seen a number of government and non-governmental scholarships being awarded to many African students hence the large number in different learning institutions across China。
This movement has led to the desperate need for cultural education and is exchange programs due to people to people interaction being witnessed these days. It is in this regard that music plays an important role in cultural awareness. Therefore it is the duty of every artist to be an ambassador of their culture and nation. One young man in a quest to promote African music is Zimbabwean born Dj Godfrey Laughter Tsuro.
Born and raised in Harare the capital city of Zimbabwe 21 years ago, Godfrey was exposed to music at a very tender age. He grew up in music and he loved it. He says, “Music is my life. Everything I do and every free time I get, it’s for music.”
They had a little studio in their Chitungwiza home set up by his brother. There is nothing wrong in starting small but there is everything wrong in remaining small. Their studio started in 2009 is now an international studio called Megabeats. Dj Godfrey is also an artist signed under Megabeats.
Godfrey admires his brother whom he considers as his mentor. He attributes everything he is today to the hard-work of his brother Erasmus Tsuro a renowned Dj in his own right who goes by the name Dj Bronclyn. Godfrey says, “My brother has been with me since I was young. He believed in me and he guided me throughout.”
During his school days in Harare, Godfrey became a school Dj. This did not affect his school work as he was excelling academically too. When he arrived in China under the guidance of his brother Dj Bronclyn who is also his manager alongside
Ronstadt and Rolandt, it was only a matter of few months before Dj Godfrey became the talk of Hangzhou.
“The first week that I came to China, my brother gave me a platform to perform and wow! It was great,” he recalls the moment.
Dj Godfrey Laughter aka Your Girlfriend’s Favourite Dj is not only a charming mix-master but also an undisputed event organizer. He is on record along with his right hand man, his brother Dj Bronclyn for organizing one of the best events Hangzhou has ever had which brought Zimbabweans in and around Hangzhou together and it was dubbed Zim Connect. Once again Dj Godfrey Laughter showed that he is here to stay.
How does he balance his time or is he full time on music? Well, the Dj is a full time Telecommunication Engineering student at China Jiliang University and he has master the art of balancing his time and setting his priorities right. When your vision is clear is clear and you love what you do, you always find a way. Dj Godfrey Laughter came to China early this 2018 and through hard work and determination has achieved a lot. In June just a few months after his arrival, the Dj was awarded the Best Upcoming Dj in the Xiasha Lifestyle Awards which honor all outstanding achievers in that city and this award gave me the thumbs to the direction is headed to.
Responding to whether African music is being received in China and among other foreigners, he said, “For people to receive the music, I think it is because of the Djs. The Djs are the ones who influence the people to love the music.” He commended the Djs in Hangzhou for promoting Zimbabwean music and Africa at large. However, he emphasized the need for more work to be done in promoting African music in China.
‘Your Girlfriend’s Favourite Dj ‘ spoke highly on the need for young people to believe in themselves. He said, “You must be the first person to believe in whatever you do. I believe I’m the best and I believe in myself. You must not turn back because of critics, learn and move on.”
