Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication is one of Beijing's best old schools which opened in 1958. It is conveniently situated in the Daxing district of Beijing.
The institute known in short as BIGC, is home to thousands of students studying in different departments. Included is the International School of Education which has a number of students from different countries.
BIGC hosts it's sports gala yearly and this year it was held on 18th of May. This is a huge event as it brings everyone in the BIGC together. Sport is a powerful tool to bring people together and creates a sense of community.
Socializing and checking on each other, sports facilitate it all.
Sports are a way to stay healthy and in shape but their importance goes further than that. Sports teach life lessons like discipline, responsibility, self control, accountability and teamwork.
Sports are an integral part of learning. Students need to be both physically and mentally healthy in order to fully perform well in their academics. It helps them to relax and reduces anxiety. Exercising is a great way to get out of the stressful college life which is about homework, presentations, projects and examinations.
So, a day like this is not only for people to come out and have fun but also an extension of the classroom into the playground .
Jimmy an international 2nd year student in the Automation Department, was clear on his thoughts about the day. "It's about health. Sports lead to healthy and as students we need to be healthy to perform to our full potential in our studies," he said.
The Opening Ceremony
The opening speeches were given by Principal Luo Xueke,
Athletes representative Zhou Rui tong,
Referee representative Mr Gao Kai.
The opening ceremony was a spectacle. It brought a feeling of one taking part in the opening ceremony of the olympics. The parade was colorful as every department in BIGC wore different colors.
THE NATIONAL GUARD
The display from the National Guard was second to none. They moved with such perfection you could think they were robots. In this world of life-size robots, you have to just be sure.
1. SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION. ( Ali is the flag bearer)
2 SCHOOL OF VOCATIONAL AND CONTINUING EDUCATION
3.SCHOOL OF ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT
There were many other various departments on parade.
After the Sports Gala known in Chinese language as 'Yundong hui 运动会' was declared open by Mr Tien Chung-Lee, events started. A number of international students took part. They had participants in the 100m, 400m, 800m, 4x400m, high jump and shot put.
In the 800m event the International School was represented by Max who is a 1st year Business Management Student from Liberia.
Speaking before the event, Max said that he was there to have fun. Just like students at the PE playground having fun. Max walked into the field with such ease and everyone already knew what to expect.
Indeed he had so much fun as he came first in his 800m event. It wasn't such an easy finish as he had someone right besides him aiming for the same position. In the end he pumped that last gas and pushed to the finish line in an uproar from the crowd.
He had so much support from his friends and family, the International School. He made everyone proud.
Like mentioned before, it was all about fun and keeping fit. Another international student Rajesh from Nepal did very well. Rajesh also participated in the 800m event not in the same group as Max. Rajesh was all about enjoying himself. Rajesh had a day.
In the 400m event, international students were represented by Sushil with quite a great performance and merry heart. He entered the field to have fun while keeping fit. He never gave up but ran all his races to the end. Such is life, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
4×100m RELAY was Sushil, Rajesh, Waleed and Max.
The International School was represented by Francis.
He took that shot like a pro.
Just from his physical appearance, it was almost predictable which event he would participate in and the guess was right.
The International School was represented by Lenny who can jump as high as his height. Calm and relaxed, he waited for his event. Carrying 9113 Lenny walked tall into the field.
Lenny came into the event with a 185m record which he obtained many years ago. Just like everyone else, it was all about having fun.
You could see sportsmanship as the jumpers encouraged each other and were all smiles.
Lenny himself gave quite a show.He is not that guy who will jump and beat his chest like a gorilla. He just walked heads high like a champion and the crowd did the yeah!
The Chinese jumpers having fun with Lenny were equally awesome.
Lenny came first with an easy jump at 165m. Although he did not beat his record, he still got it. And a beautiful sight was the cheering he was getting. Family unit. After the event friends came around to get some photos. I mean, who wouldn't want to be close to a champinion. Speaking after the event Lenny laughed as he said, "I guess age is finally catching up with me."
The staff in the International School were exceptionally wonderful. They proved that indeed they can be entrusted with the academic growth of their students. Not only do they care while in the classroom but also outside. They stood by their students to the end. It's not easy to deal with intercultural differences and having to reach that level of harmony. They are indeed the best.
Their smiles so beautiful. Their hearts so warm. Their brains so rich.
There were different kinds of activities. Participants included the whole stuff of BIGC.
