It started off as a normal graduation day filled with joy, accomplishment and celebration. The Computer Science graduate, Jean Gwenero was excited that finally she was graduating. However, the day turned out to be more than an academic graduation day but also a romantic one. Jean couldn't hide excitement in her voice as she narrates the happenings of that day.
" I'm up on the stage, I'm like nervous, shoes are hurting and I'm walking on to the other end of the stage, I see him coming up and I'm like what's going on.Yoo bro what are you doing? I was like wait whatttt! I couldn't even believe it. I was so shocked and very happy at the same time."
It's love made in China. Jean Gwenero met Baiz Caronas from Tanzania in 2017. They were both international students at Zhejiang University of Technology in Hangzhou where she was doing Computer Science and the guy doing International Economics and Trade. They met via China's popular social platform, Wechat group where they became friends. Jean recalls with a chuckle how she requested him first to add her as she liked the photos he used to post from photo shoots. She too wanted to do a photo shoot for her 21st birthday and so they went together, behold love was born. Their birthdays are 13th for the guy and 16th for Jean both in September.
Asked how her family are taking the engagement she said, "My mom was very happy. She couldn't keep calm. Graduation and engagement at same time. She is a very good judge of character and last year when she came to visit in China, she met him as the kind-hearted humble guy he is."
Jean says on graduation day, her mother sent message to Baiz thanking him for attending as she couldn't make it and this according to the guy gave him the encouragement to go on his knee. Hyped as we were, we wanted to know about the big day and Jean calmed us down, " Well, we haven't set anything yet because we have to do the right way of introductions, lobola and everything else. We move according to God's plan, that's us from day one."
While it has not always been rosy for them studying in China, Jean is grateful and blessed to have completed her studies and meeting an amazing person Baiz whom she regards as her best friend. Since the day of her graduation, Jean and Baiz have been showered with love from friends and relatives and fellow students. So many love stories have surfaced in China involving foreigners but none as beautiful as this one from our own Zimbabwean pride. China has seen a massive influx of African students hence the increased number of cross-cultural relationships. We say congratulations to Jean and Baiz as they climb the ladder of success and love.
