We all believe home is our safe haven from the harsh world outside and so if something happens in our comfort zone it becomes more disturbing. A Durban family was left devastated after one of their family member was killed while sitting on her bed.
Nonhlanhla Vumba of Umlazi, South of Durban died after being hit by a stray bullet at her home. The 23-year old was sitting on her bed in her shack when people started shooting at a man outside her home.
The brother Thembile told a local newspaper that he was sitting in his shack when he heard the shooting and thought it was children playing with fireworks. When he went into her sister's shack, he was shocked to see her lying on the floor bleeding. Thembile called the neighbours to help him take her to hospital but she was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
It was reported that a group of men were chasing a man they had been looking for, while shooting at him. It was at that time a stray bullet shot into Nonhlanhla's shack and she was shot. The man they were shooting at also died on the road.
A murder case was opened.
This is not the first time innocent people have died due to gun violence in South Africa with crimes related to gangs and armed robberies. On the same day Nonhlanhla was shot dead, in a separate incident, a 23 year old man was fatally shot by unknown suspects.
Just few days before Christmas, five people were shot and killed in a tavern in Johannesburg which led the police into deploying more police patrols as the festive season began.
