Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has confirmed that South Africa's first suspected case of Covid-19 has tested positive.
Mkhize released a statement on Thursday confirming that the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NCID) confirmed a positive test.
While it was not clear at which port of entry the patient landed, Mkhize said that a tracer team has been deployed to KwaZulu Natal. The man is now self-isolated.
"The patient is a 38 year old male who traveled to Italy with his wife. They were part of a group of 10 people they arrived back in South Africa on 1 March,"said Minister Mkhize in the statement
"The patient consulted general practitioner on the 3rd of March with symptoms of fever, headache, a sore throat and a cough."
The doctor who attended the patient has been isolated as well.
