WHO IS BEHIND THE YUMMY BIG MAC?
The man behind the famous Big Mac we enjoy today was a World War II army sergeant Michael James ‘Jim’ Delligatti, who was a native of Western Pennsylvania. He returned to his home state and opened a fast-food joint of his own with a business partner in Pittsburgh in 1953; two years later,he fatefully went to a restaurant convention in Chicago where McDonald’s had a booth. He decided to signed up with the McDonald’s to open a franchise to cut costs.
Delligatti opened his first McDonald’s in 1957 and he went on to become a prolific franchisee. Within the next decade, however, he had come to believe that he could build a better sandwich that would boost his profits. He wanted to create a larger sandwich that people would really like.He asked McDonald’s and they turned him down several times.Because of his persistence, they finally agreed under condition that they use their ingredients and Delligatti sourced the sesame seed bun.
Dellagatti ran 47 stores becoming one of the world's largest franchise in history.According to his son,Dellagatti ate one Big Mac per week.He also helped to introduce the McDonald's breakfast ,the hotcakes and sausage meal.Asked why it's called Big Mac,his son was qouted saying his father thought the name sounded too fun.
The burger’s main ingredients are all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions, on a sesame seed bun.In August 2017 it is believed that the recipe leaked online. The Mac is now in 3 sizes,Junior Mac,Big Mac and Grand Mac and people still prefer the Big Mac.
Business insider reported that McDonald's sold over 1,3 billion Big Macs around the world in 2017.Despite the success of the Big Mac,the creator never got any royalties for his invention.
As the McDonald’s celebrate Big Mac’s 50th birthday, they have developed their own ‘MacCoins’ which people can use to buy the Big Mac according to their tweet on their official page.It has been reported the the coins will be in different designs showcasing 5 decades of the Big Mac era.The ‘70s coin will showcase flower power, the ‘80s coin will be pop art, the ‘90s coin will be bold with abstract shapes, the early ‘00s coin will focus on early technology, and the ‘10s coin will focus on the evolution of communication.
