A police officer in Yunfu, South China was fired from his job after it was discovered that he had children born outside the birth-control plan. The officer has four children, one from previous marriage and three from current wife. According to police investigations the officer named Xue never reported his wife's pregnancy to the authority after she was discovered that she was four months pregnant in 2018. Officer Xue was asked to 'deal' with the situation accordingly but he insisted that the child be born. According to relevant Chinese laws, civil servants will be fired if they violate the family planning regulations. His wife a primary school teacher was fired too. This is just one of the many cases.
'Children are a blessing from God'. How many times have you heard this statement from people around. I remember my mom telling me that my brother was going to have another baby. I expressed my shock at hearing this. How can he be having more kids under such harsh economic conditions. I never minced my words. My mom rebuked me. "Ah stop talking like that. Children are a blessing from God."
I was not ready to be silenced, after all, I'm no longer a baby. I tried to reason, "Mama things are hard. Already brother has kids he can't even feed and now continue to bring more kids into hunger. How is he going to send these kids to school?"
My mom was not going to listen to me. " God will provide for them. And these children will look after him when he is old. You should be thinking of kids too. "
That was the moment I let her feel like she had won. No special persuasive words could change her thinking. Many out there with same mentality.
Should there be regulating laws in the number of children one can have? Which criteria can be used to determine the number of children one is eligible to have?
We have seen in Africa, particularly hunger-stricken communities where families have as many as eight to ten children. These children will be suffering with no food or clothes. A lot of children are forced to become beggars and little girls being married early. Still the parents find themselves expecting more children because 'children are a blessing from God'. Is this term being used appropriately or misplaced. Indeed children are a blessing from God because there are many people out there looking for fruit of the womb. However, sometimes this statement is used to justify some actions that are causing children suffering.
