A South African lady's tweet has gone viral after she posted that she refused to be served by a Zimbabwean waitress. She wrote that she was at Wimpy Clearwater Mall where she wanted to have breakfast. She alleges that a Zimbabwean waitress by the name Nomatter came to serve them at their table.
She went on to say that she politely told the waitress that she wanted to be served by a South African and not an alien. "Normalize refusing to be served by aliens", she wrote. The twitter handle Shokwakhe went on to put the once trending hashtag #PutSouthAfricansFirst.
The hashtag trended on twitter with groups calling on the chasing away of foreigners in South Africa. They were demanding that all jobs be reserved for South Africans only as most of the youth were unemployed due to foreigners especially Zimbabweans taking away their jobs.
Shokwakhe's tweet caused outrage as people accused of being ignorant to the fact that Wimpy itself was foreign owned.
There are different groups in South Africa that have been pushing the PutSouthAfricansFirst movement and another action gathering momentum for the October 16 Clean South Africa campaign aimed at reducing the number of foreigners in South Africa. However, this movement has been labelled by some as xenophobic. Zimbabweans and Nigerians have been the main targets of these movements with a recent one where they marched to the Nigerian embassy in South Africa to air grievances about the conduct of Nigerian citizens in South Africa.
The tweet is just one of many on social media.
